What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of discomfort related to the fear of impending danger . it is the bodies natural response to stress .However, when anxiety becomes excessive or prolonged, it can be debilitating and have a negative impact on a person's life. 

Anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms, such as increased heart rate, trembling, sweating, and dizziness. It can also cause emotional symptoms, such as a sense of impending doom, nervousness, and difficulty concentrating. 

In severe cases, anxiety can lead to panic attacks, which are characterized by sudden, intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, and a feeling of losing control. 

What are the types of anxiety?

There are several different types of anxiety disorders, each with its own unique symptoms and causes.

The most common types of anxiety disorders are:

1. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)


2. Social anxiety disorder


3. Panic disorder


4. Phobias


5.Substance induced anxiety disorder

Generalized Anxiety disorder (GAD)

Is characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry about everyday life events. People with GAD may feel anxious about their health, finances, or their relationships. They may also have trouble concentrating and may feel restless or on edge.

 Social anxiety disorder

Also known as social phobia, is a fear of social situations in which one might be judged or embarrassed. This can lead to avoiding social situations altogether. Some examples of social anxiety disorder include: 

* OCD Obsessive Compulsive disorder characterised by recurrent obsession,a person painful intrusive thought that are difficult to suppress or ignore.

* PTSD Post traumatic Stress disorder which usually occurs as a result of past life experiences such as bullying,harassment,child abuse etc.

* Separation Anxiety disorder an inappropriate feeling of being separated from a person or a  place .

Panic Disorder

  Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by sudden and unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks are episodes of intense fear that come on quickly and may last for several minutes. Panic attacks can be very frightening and can lead to a fear of having another panic attack. People with panic disorder may avoid places or situations where they have had a panic attack or where they think they might have one. This avoidance can interfere with a person's daily life. 


Phobia

A phobia is an intense and persistent fear of a specific object or situation that is out of proportion to the actual danger it poses.  Phobias can cause a person to avoid the object or situation they are afraid of, and this avoidance can interfere with their daily life. Common phobias include a fear of heights (acrophobia), a fear of spiders (arachnophobia), and a fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia). There are many different types of phobias, and some people have more than one phobia.

Substance-induced anxiety disorder 

Is an anxiety disorder that develops as a result of taking drugs or medication. Substances that can cause anxiety include alcohol, marijuana, and stimulants like cocaine or amphetamines. Anxiety caused by substances is usually temporary, but it can become chronic if the person continues to use the substance. The symptoms of substance-induced anxiety disorder are similar to those of other anxiety disorders. 

Examples of substances that Induces anxiety includes: caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.

 Caffeine is a stimulant that can cause jitters and nervousness. 

Alcohol is a depressant that can cause rebound anxiety and irritability when the effects wear off.

 Nicotine is a stimulant that can cause increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to feelings of anxiety. In addition to these substances, some medications, such as antidepressants, may also cause anxiety as a side effect.

How do you know you have anxiety?

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether you are experiencing anxiety or if your symptoms are caused by something else. However, there are some common signs and symptoms that can help you figure out whether you may have an anxiety disorder. These include:

- Feeling nervous, restless, or tense

- A sense of impending doom or danger

- Shortness of breath or rapid breathing

- Increased heart rate

- Trembling or shaking

- Sweating or hot flashes

- Nausea or digestive problems

- Difficulty concentrating or feeling "foggy"

- Feeling irritable or jumpy

- Difficulty sleeping or nightmares


Note: If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to talk to a doctor or mental health professional. They can help you figure out whether your symptoms are related to an anxiety disorder or if there is another underlying cause

 It is also important to remember that everyone experiences anxiety from time to time, so it is not necessarily indicative of a disorder. However, if your anxiety is interfering with your daily life or causing you distress, it is important to seek help. 

How do I overcome anxiety?

- Identify your triggers.

- Practice deep breathing exercises.

- Exercise regularly.

- Write in a journal.

- Get enough sleep.

- Talk to a friend or family member.

- In cases of social anxiety master the acts of public speaking by first talking to yourself in the mirror then to some number of persons then to a group of people.

- Talk to a therapist.

- Use relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or guided imagery.

- Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

- Eat a healthy diet.

- Limit your exposure to news and social media.

- Practice self-compassion.

- Take breaks throughout the day.

- Learn to say no.

- Focus on the present moment.
